A Melbourne, London & Hong Kong dessert blog
Quick, simple, yet still so delicious, one-of-a-kind, souffle pancakes at a Japanese-French-influenced cafe.
Good dining experiences in shopping centres or hotels? That’s positively unthinkable in Melbourne, hit-and-miss in London, and the only way to do it in Hong Kong. Maybe however, there are exceptions. Wedged at the grocery-shopping end of the massive mall complex that is Chadstone, the recently-opened Miam Miam might just be that exception in Melbourne. At first glance, with a utilitarian, industrial fit-out, Miam Miam looks like yet-another typical Melbourne cafe. Indeed, it wouldn’t look out of place on a Fitzroy or Richmond street. However, hailing from Japan, its agenda fuses both Japanese and French sensibilities. You will find both green tea/matcha powder -based creations as well as souffle-based dishes sitting side by side at Miam Miam. It’s rather interesting and strange at the same time.
We are not fans of green tea-based desserts, so while we cannot speak about these, we do encourage you, no, urge you to order the souffle pancakes at Miam Miam. Think super-fat, cake slabs. Covered in a variety of toppings — caramelised deep-fried banana or cinnamon-dusted apple and swirls upon swirls of velvety cream. Oh dear….it’s going to require another round of the shopping complex.
Every dessert lover would no doubt agree that it is not always necessary to indulge in desserts presented and crafted like a modern art piece. Sometimes, simple yet decadent is all that is needed. As a prelude, intermission or epilogue to a long day of shopping, souffle pancakes at Miam Miam just hit that spot.
